Frequently Asked Questions

With their extensive knowledge of colleges, independent educational consultants can broaden the potential choices and provide vital help in weighing factors such as cost, location, and curriculum. With an IEC, your student has the opportunity to explore a wider variety of options and discuss possibilities in a meaningful way. Because they are not tied to any specific school, college, or program, consultants are not burdened with unrelated duties, and are available at the family’s convenience-not just during school hours during the school year.

Why?

  • College selection is a major decision – It’s often the first significant choice a student makes and the second-largest financial investment a family undertakes (after buying a home). With several schools now costing $100,000 per year, making an informed decision is more important than ever.

  • Finding the right fit is essential – The right college can enrich a student’s life and set the foundation for future success including finding the right career. Without guidance, many families feel overwhelmed by the process.

  • Avoid costly mistakes – Choosing the wrong college can lead to transfers, lost time, and additional tuition expenses.

  • Save time and reduce stress – Busy students and parents don’t have time to research every school’s unique admission criteria. An IEC streamlines the process.

  • Strengthen applications – Students learn how to highlight their strengths, improving their chances of admission.

  • Scholarship and financial aid guidance – IECs understand which schools offer need- and merit-based aid.

  • Up-to-date admissions knowledge – IECs attend conferences, visit colleges, and network with admissions officers to stay informed on the most recent trends and expectations of a successful application.

  • Maintain family harmony – High school can be a stressful time for families, with the potential for daily conflicts. Hiring an IEC helps remove tension by providing a neutral, third-party perspective. We guide students through the process, fostering independence and accountability. Our coaching builds confidence, ensuring students stay on track while allowing parents to step back—eliminating the need to micromanage and enabling families to enjoy their student’s high school experience.

Who?

What should I look for in an Independent Educational Consultant?

It’s important to hire an IEC who is a member of a professional organization. I am a proud member of:

  • IECA (Independent Educational Consultants Association) – Requires a master’s degree in counseling or a related field, extensive experience, and ongoing professional training.

  • HECA (Higher Education Consultants Association) – Committed to ethical college advising and continuing education.

  • AICEP (American Institute of Certified Educational Planners) – Represents the highest level of professional achievement in college advising.

These affiliations ensure I adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and stay updated on the latest trends in college admissions.

When?

When if the right time to start working with an IEC?

I believe students need to experience high school before they start thinking about college. That is why I recommend waiting until sophomore year to start meeting regularly. However, I know the importance of class selction and community service and do meet with eighth and ninth graders to make sure they are on pace to take the correct classes.
